Since ancient times, Son Tra has been an island located far from the mainland, consisting of three high mountains. The southeast peak looks like a unicorn leaning out to sea, so it is called Hon Nghe, the west peak is shaped like a hawk's beak, so it is called Mo Dieu peak, and the northern peak stretches towards Ngu Hai on the other side of the estuary, as long as a horse's neck, so it is called Co Ngua peak. Over time, the coastal currents have gradually deposited alluvium on the land from the mainland to the island, creating Son Tra peninsula. Together with the mountain system of Hai Van Son in the North, Son Tra peninsula in the South surrounds itself in a bow shape, creating a sea bay called Vung Son Tra, or also known by the common names such as Vung Thung, Vung Han, Vung Tien Sa, Vung Da Nang. Vung Son Tra is wide but deep and secluded, the water surface is calm and clear. Tien Sa port and Lien Chieu port are both located in this bay and can receive ships with a capacity of over 20,000 tons to enter and anchor easily.
Because Son Tra peninsula has a special position that can control a large territorial sea and is a fence to protect Da Nang and Quang Nam, during the Nguyen Dynasty, there were soldiers stationed here. During the Minh Mang Dynasty, a "sea defense fortress" was built to control the sea. In early 1858, the French and Spanish allied forces attacked and occupied Son Tra peninsula, opening the way for the later Vietnam - France war. Under the US - puppet regime, Son Tra peninsula became a solid defensive fortress with Tien Sa military port, radar station, artillery base and many other modern means of war. Although the vegetation here was severely damaged during the fierce war, the primeval forest on the peninsula remained intact, a wild nature museum located next to a large urban area.
Son Tra Peninsula has nearly 4,000 hectares of forest, part of which is hilly land covered with industrial crops. Some people have compared Son Tra to a giant lung providing oxygen for Da Nang city. In this primeval forest, there are 289 species of higher plants belonging to 217 genera and 90 families. Regarding animals, this is the habitat of monkey relatives with more than 400 langurs and many species of long-tailed monkeys. In addition, there are weasels, wild boars, jungle fowls, muntjacs, etc.
Son Tra Mountain is 700m high. Standing from the center of Da Nang city, looking up is truly "soaring to the ninth cloud". Son Tra Mountain has long been considered a natural meteorological station for the people in the surrounding area. Standing from the top of Son Tra Mountain, visitors can see the whole scene in all directions: far to the South is Ngu Hanh Mountain with five peaks rising in the middle of the immense sand sea, to the Southeast is Cu Lao Cham undulating on the river, to the West is the bustling city with the Han River flowing like a silk strip, to the North is the Hai Van Son mountain system undulating out to sea...
Today, Son Tra peninsula is still pristine with many poetic beaches stretching for tens of kilometers. Tourists can go from Tien Sa port to the north to reach Tien Sa beach. According to legend, in the past, fairies came down from heaven to walk and bathe here. If you go south, you will see Xep beach, But beach, Nam beach, which are very charming, with a fairy-like scene appearing before your eyes. Only Bac beach can only be reached by boat. The beaches here are pristine, deserted, with white sand exposed to the bright summer sun. On these beautiful beaches, some companies have invested in building many motels as well as marine services to serve tourists for sightseeing and entertainment.
Son Tra Peninsula is being invested in to exploit eco-tourism tours. The vitality of a wild mountainous area is fueled by the stimulus of Da Nang city and domestic and foreign investors, and in the future, Son Tra will become a large-scale tourist city. Ambitious investment projects are building Son Tra into an eco-tourism and resort peninsula with three to five star standards.
In early 2009, the 1,255m long Thuan Phuoc Bridge connected Hai Chau and Son Tra districts, opening up an opportunity to develop tourism on the peninsula. Tourists have many opportunities to explore the “green lung” in the heart of the city in an enjoyable and comfortable way during the sunny and windy summer…
